I get asked this question more often than almost any other in web design conversations. A Dubai business owner has decided to build or redo their website. They have heard of Wix and WordPress. They want to know which one to pick.

The honest answer is: it depends on what the site needs to do. I will explain both platforms plainly, show you where each one genuinely wins, and give you a clear recommendation framework at the end. I run Markamo, a Dubai digital marketing agency that builds websites and runs ads. We build on WordPress, so I have a preference, which is exactly why I am going to tell you clearly when Wix is actually the better choice.

What these platforms actually are

Before comparing them, it helps to understand what each one is.

A CMS, or content management system, is the software that lets you build and edit a website without writing code from scratch. Think of it as the operating system for your site. Wix and WordPress are both CMS platforms, but they work very differently.

Wix is a hosted, all-in-one service. You sign up, pick a template, drag elements around a visual editor, and publish. Wix handles the hosting (the server where your site lives), the software, the updates, and the security. You pay a monthly fee and everything runs under one roof. The trade-off is that you cannot take the site off Wix and host it somewhere else.

WordPress (specifically WordPress.org, the self-hosted version) is free open-source software you install on your own hosting account. You choose a theme to control how it looks, add plugins (small add-on tools) for extra functionality, and manage updates yourself. The learning curve is steeper. In return, you get full control over the code, the hosting environment, and where the site lives. About 43% of all websites on the internet run on WordPress, including major news outlets, e-commerce stores, and government portals.

The comparison that matters for a Dubai business

cost

A Wix paid plan runs roughly AED 60 to AED 250 per month, which includes hosting. There is no separate server bill. However, some Wix apps (their version of plugins) cost extra, and if you hire a Wix designer to build the site for you, Dubai designer rates add AED 3,000 to AED 15,000 to the initial cost depending on how much work is involved.

WordPress itself costs nothing to download, but you need hosting. Decent shared hosting for a small business site runs AED 30 to AED 150 per month. A solid theme costs AED 250 to AED 600 as a one-time purchase. Basic paid plugins (SEO tools, form builders, backup tools) add another AED 600 to AED 1,500 per year. If you hire a developer or agency to build the site, expect AED 5,000 to AED 40,000 depending on complexity, with many Dubai agencies starting at AED 8,000 for a standard business site.

The total first-year cost for a self-built Wix site is lower. Once you bring in professional help, the gap narrows. For a professionally built site with ongoing support, the costs are broadly comparable.

ease of use

Wix wins here, without qualification. If you want to edit your own homepage text on a Sunday morning without calling anyone, Wix makes that straightforward. The drag-and-drop editor is visual, the mobile preview is immediate, and support is available inside the platform.

WordPress has improved enormously with its block editor, which lets you build pages by stacking sections visually. But under the hood you still manage plugin updates, monitor for security patches, and troubleshoot the occasional conflict when two plugins do not play nicely. If something breaks on a WordPress site, you need either a developer or enough technical patience to search for the fix.

For a business owner who wants to run the site entirely independently: Wix.

For a business that plans to work with an agency or developer anyway: WordPress.

SEO

This is where the gap is most significant, especially in a competitive market like Dubai.

SEO stands for search engine optimisation. It is the practice of making your site appear in Google when someone searches for what you sell. A site with good SEO foundations loads quickly, has clean page code, uses proper headings and page titles, and is structured in a way Google can easily read.

WordPress gives you granular control over every one of these factors. You can adjust the URL of every page, control exactly what appears in search results for each page, add structured data (a way of marking up your content so Google understands it better), and choose a hosting server fast enough to score well on Google's speed tests. Plugins like Yoast or Rank Math give you a checklist for every page.

Wix has made real improvements to its SEO capabilities since 2020. You can edit page titles and meta descriptions, add alt text to images, and adjust URLs. For a local Dubai business targeting low-competition searches, a well-optimised Wix site can rank.

The limitation shows when competition increases. Google Ads quality scores are partly based on page speed and relevance. If you are spending AED 5,000 or more per month on ads, a half-second improvement in page load time can meaningfully lower your cost per lead. Wix gives you limited control over the JavaScript that runs on every page, which is the main reason Wix sites tend to score lower on Google's Core Web Vitals tests compared to a lean, well-configured WordPress build.

For any business running paid search ads, or targeting keywords where multiple competitors are actively investing in SEO, WordPress is the stronger foundation.

scalability

Scalability here means how well the platform handles growth: more pages, more products, more languages, more traffic, more complex functionality.

WordPress scales without a ceiling. You can build a five-page brochure site and expand it into a fifty-page e-commerce store with Arabic and English versions, booking integrations, CRM connections, and a members area, all on the same installation. The plugin ecosystem covers almost any functionality you can think of, with thousands of free and paid options.

Wix scales reasonably for small to medium sites. It offers e-commerce, bookings, and membership functionality. Where it struggles is custom integrations. If you need to connect your site to a CRM that Wix does not natively support, or build a product configurator, or handle high traffic volumes from a viral campaign, the platform constraints start to show.

For a Dubai business that expects the website to grow in complexity over three to five years, WordPress handles the long term better.

ownership

On Wix, you own your content, but you do not own the platform your site runs on. If you decide to leave Wix, your design, layout, and CMS installation stay on Wix. You can export basic text and images, but recreating the site on another platform requires starting over or significant manual work. You are also subject to Wix's pricing decisions going forward.

On WordPress, you own everything: the code, the database, the design files. You can move the site to a different host in an afternoon. You can hand the files to a new developer. No single company controls your access to your own website.

For a business that treats its website as a long-term commercial asset, the ownership question matters. A Dubai company that has spent two years building search rankings on a Wix site and then needs to migrate because of platform limitations faces real costs and potential ranking disruption.

What this means for a Dubai business specifically

Dubai's digital market has a few characteristics that affect this decision.

First, paid search competition is high. Industries like real estate, healthcare, legal services, and education see Google Ads cost-per-click figures of AED 15 to AED 80 or more. When you are paying that much per click, every percentage point of conversion rate matters, and page speed directly affects conversion rates. A site that loads in 1.5 seconds converts measurably better than one that loads in 3.5 seconds. WordPress gives you more control over the levers that drive speed.

Second, professional website builds in Dubai range from AED 5,000 for a basic project to AED 80,000 or more for large custom work. Most agencies in Dubai do not publish their prices. At Markamo, web design is a fixed one-time quote, with a landing page from AED 2,500 and a business website from AED 4,000, and you own the site outright. Whatever agency you use, ask exactly what is included and who owns the accounts when the project ends.

Third, if Arabic language support is part of your plan, both platforms handle right-to-left text, but WordPress gives you more control over how Arabic and English content are structured and indexed separately by Google. This matters if you want to rank for Arabic-language searches, which are often less competitive than English searches for the same service.

Wix or WordPress: the right platform depends on your budget, goals, and who maintains the site.

When Wix is genuinely the right choice

I want to be direct about this because most comparisons written by agencies only recommend what they sell.

Wix is the better pick if:

You are going to build and maintain the site yourself, have a limited budget for setup, and the site's primary job is to give your business a basic online presence (contact page, services list, location). A well-built Wix site on their Business plan runs AED 150 per month, takes a weekend to build, and does that job well.

You are a sole trader or very small business where the time cost of learning WordPress or managing a developer relationship is not justified by the commercial return from the site.

You need a site live in days, not weeks, and you accept the trade-offs on SEO and ownership.

Wix has real strengths. The editor is genuinely easy. The templates are modern. The platform is stable. For the use cases above, it is the sensible choice.

When WordPress is the right choice

WordPress is the right pick if:

You plan to run Google Ads or any paid search campaign and want the landing page performance to work in your favour rather than against you.

You want the site to generate organic search traffic over time, particularly in a competitive Dubai vertical.

You expect the site to grow: more pages, an e-commerce section, booking functionality, multilingual content, or integrations with other tools.

You want to own the site outright and be able to take it anywhere.

You are working with an agency or developer anyway, which removes most of the complexity of setup.

How we build at Markamo

At Markamo, we build on WordPress for all client websites. The reason is straightforward: our clients primarily use their websites as landing page infrastructure for paid ads and as long-term SEO assets. Both of those use cases benefit from the performance control and ownership that WordPress provides.

Our web design service covers the full build: design, development, content structure, speed optimisation, and SEO foundations baked in from page one. Sites are built to load fast because that directly affects cost-per-lead on ads. We publish pricing openly because we think it is a reasonable thing to do.

The honest recommendation

If you are a small business, going to manage the site yourself, and the site's job is a basic online presence with no real dependency on Google traffic: use Wix.

If you are running paid ads, want SEO to generate leads over time, or expect your website to grow into a serious commercial asset: use WordPress.

The platform is one decision. The more important decisions are who builds it, how well they structure it for search and speed, and whether you own it properly when the project ends. A badly built WordPress site will underperform a well-built Wix site. A well-built WordPress site, maintained by someone who knows what they are doing, gives you tools that compound over time.

If you are at the decision point and want a second opinion on what your site actually needs, feel free to reach out through Markamo's homepage. We are a small team, the conversation goes to a real person, and we will tell you honestly if you need us or not.
