I run Markamo, a small digital marketing agency in Dubai. I founded it because I kept seeing the same problem: business owners paying good money for digital marketing they did not fully understand, with no idea whether it was working.

This guide is my attempt to fix that. I am going to walk through every main digital marketing service, explain what it actually does in plain words, tell you what it costs in Dubai, and help you figure out which ones you need.

I am not going to tell you to use all of them. Most businesses should not. I will be specific about that.

What is digital marketing, in plain words?

Digital marketing is anything you do online to attract customers. That includes ads on Google and Instagram, getting your website to show up in search results, building a following on social media, and making sure your website is easy to use and clearly explains what you do.

The goal is always the same: get the right people to find you, and turn enough of them into paying customers to make the whole thing worth the money.

What it is: You pay to show your business at the top of Google search results. When someone types "interior design company Dubai" or "dental clinic near me", your ad appears above the organic results. You pay each time someone clicks on the ad. That is why it is also called PPC, which stands for pay-per-click.

What it is good for: Any business where people search for what you sell. If someone already knows they want a service and they are typing for it on Google, your ad can catch them at exactly that moment. It is the fastest way to start getting enquiries.

How fast it works: You can have ads running within a day of setup. Most accounts start generating leads within the first two to three weeks, once the algorithm has gathered enough data to optimise who sees the ads.

What it costs in Dubai: The cost per click depends heavily on your industry. For most service businesses, you will pay between AED 5 and AED 25 per click. In highly competitive categories like legal services or real estate, clicks can reach AED 40 to AED 60. Most small to medium businesses in Dubai run ad budgets of AED 3,000 to AED 15,000 per month. That budget goes directly to Google. On top of that, you pay whoever is managing the campaigns. At Markamo, that is a flat fee from AED 2,950 per month.

One thing to know: Google Ads only works if your landing page (the page someone arrives at after clicking the ad) is clear and convincing. Sending paid traffic to a confusing website is like filling a leaking bucket. Fix the bucket first.

Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram ads)

What it is: Paid ads that appear on Facebook and Instagram. Unlike Google Ads, people do not search for your product. Meta shows your ad to people whose behaviour and interests match what you are targeting. You might target women aged 25 to 45 in Dubai who have shown interest in home renovation, for example.

What it is good for: Products and services that are visual and decision-driven. Clinics, gyms, restaurants, real estate developers, fashion brands, and home services all do well here. It is also strong for retargeting, which means showing ads to people who visited your website but did not enquire. You remind them you exist.

How fast it works: Meta's algorithm needs time to learn who is most likely to respond to your ad. Expect the first two to four weeks to be slower as the system calibrates. After that, performance usually improves significantly.

What it costs in Dubai: Ad budgets typically run from AED 3,000 to AED 10,000 per month for SMEs. That budget goes directly to Meta. Management fees are similar to Google Ads: AED 2,000 to AED 5,000 per month depending on the agency and the complexity of your account.

One thing to know: The creative, meaning the image or video in the ad, matters enormously on Meta. A weak image will tank an otherwise well-structured campaign. This is a channel where great visuals pay dividends.

Lead generation

What it is: Lead generation is not a separate platform. It is a goal, and it usually describes the whole system of attracting someone, showing them an ad or page, getting them to fill in a form or call you, and passing that enquiry to your sales team.

When an agency says they do "lead generation", they typically mean they set up and run Google Ads and/or Meta Ads with the specific aim of generating form submissions or phone calls, with proper tracking in place so you know exactly how much each lead costs.

What makes it work: Tracking. If you cannot measure cost per lead, you cannot improve it. Every serious lead generation campaign needs conversion tracking set up in Google Analytics and in the ad platform. Without this, you are flying blind.

What it costs in Dubai: This rolls into the cost of whatever ad platform you are using. The management component is AED 2,500 to AED 5,000 per month at most competent agencies. The ad spend is on top of that.

SEO (search engine optimisation)

What it is: SEO is the work of making your website show up higher in Google's unpaid (organic) search results. When someone searches "marketing agency Dubai" and your website appears without an ad label next to it, that is organic traffic. SEO is how you get there.

It involves two main things. First, on-page SEO: writing pages that clearly and accurately cover the topic someone is searching for, with the right words and structure. Second, off-page SEO: getting other websites to link to yours, which tells Google your site is credible.

What it is good for: Businesses that want steady, compounding traffic without paying per click. SEO traffic does not stop the moment you stop paying, the way ad traffic does. Once you rank for a keyword that gets a few hundred searches per month, that traffic can keep coming for years.

How fast it works: Slowly. Most businesses see meaningful movement in rankings after four to six months of consistent work. Some very competitive keywords take a year or more. This is the honest truth and any SEO provider who promises you a Google ranking in 30 days is selling you something that does not exist.

What it costs in Dubai: SEO retainers run from AED 2,000 per month for a focused local scope to AED 10,000 or more for aggressive campaigns targeting multiple keywords. Cheaper is not always worse, but anything below AED 1,500 per month is usually very limited in scope. Make sure you understand exactly what work is included each month.

Web design and development

What it is: Building or rebuilding your website. This covers everything from the visual design (what it looks like) to the technical side (how fast it loads, whether it works on mobile, how easy it is for Google to read).

What it is good for: Every business with a digital presence needs a website that loads fast, is easy to understand, and clearly tells the visitor what to do next. A slow, confusing website makes every other marketing channel less effective. You can spend AED 20,000 a month on ads and lose most of that investment if the page people land on does not convert.

How fast it works: A simple brochure site for a small business typically takes four to eight weeks from brief to launch. A more complex site with a booking system, multiple languages, or custom features takes longer.

What it costs in Dubai: For a small to medium business website, budgets typically run from AED 8,000 to AED 25,000 as a one-off project. Agencies that quote far below this usually mean template-based work with minimal customisation. Anything involving serious custom development starts higher.

CRO (conversion rate optimisation)

What it is: CRO stands for conversion rate optimisation. Conversion rate means the percentage of website visitors who do what you want them to do, whether that is filling in a form, calling you, or making a purchase. CRO is the work of improving that percentage.

In practice, it means looking at where people drop off on your site, testing different versions of headlines or buttons, and making changes based on real data. It is closely tied to analytics work.

What it is good for: Businesses already getting traffic who want more leads from the same spend. If 1,000 people visit your site each month and 10 fill in a form, that is a 1% conversion rate. Getting to 2% doubles your leads without spending more on ads.

What it costs in Dubai: Most agencies bundle basic CRO into their landing page and ads management work. Dedicated CRO work is less common at smaller agencies and typically starts at AED 3,000 to AED 5,000 per month for regular testing and analysis.

Social media management

What it is: Creating and posting content on your social media accounts (Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, and others) on a regular schedule. This is different from paid Meta Ads. This is the organic content, the posts, Reels, and Stories you publish on your own profile without paying to promote them.

What it is good for: Building an audience and maintaining credibility over time. Organic social media rarely drives a flood of leads directly. It works as a trust signal: if someone sees your ads and then checks your Instagram and it looks professional and active, they are more likely to enquire.

How fast it works: Slowly. Building a meaningful organic following takes six to twelve months of consistent, quality content.

What it costs in Dubai: AED 3,000 to AED 8,000 per month for a package that includes content creation, copywriting, and scheduling. This varies enormously based on how many posts per week, how much photography or video is involved, and how many platforms you are on.

Content marketing

What it is: Creating articles, guides, videos, or other content that answers the questions your potential customers are searching for. This guide you are reading right now is an example of content marketing.

What it is good for: Building organic search traffic over time and establishing credibility in your industry. A B2B company that publishes genuinely useful guides will rank for searches and get enquiries from people who already trust them before they make contact.

What it costs in Dubai: Content retainers typically run from AED 3,000 to AED 8,000 per month depending on the volume of content and whether the agency is doing the SEO keyword research, writing, and publishing, or only part of that.

How to choose: match your goal to the right service

Here is a simple way to think about which service you actually need.

Your goal Start here
Get leads fast, budget available Google Ads
Sell a visual product or service to consumers Meta Ads (Facebook + Instagram)
Reduce paid ad costs over 6+ months SEO
Turn more site visitors into enquiries Web redesign or CRO
Build credibility and keep existing customers engaged Social media management
Attract B2B customers who search for information Content marketing
All of the above, coordinated Full-service agency

The most common mistake I see is trying to do everything at once with a small budget. AED 5,000 split across five channels produces weak results on every channel. The same AED 5,000 focused on one well-managed channel can produce real returns.

What to watch out for when hiring an agency in Dubai

A few things I have seen enough to flag clearly.

You must own your own accounts. Your Google Ads account and Meta Ads account should be created under your own login. The agency gets admin access. If you part ways, you keep the account history, the audiences, the conversion data, all of it. If an agency insists on owning the account, walk away.

Avoid percentage-of-spend pricing. Some agencies charge 15 to 20 percent of your monthly ad budget. As your budget grows, their fee grows without them doing more work. Flat fees are more transparent and almost always cheaper once your budget exceeds AED 10,000 per month.

Ask for cost per lead, not click-through rates. Any agency that reports on impressions and clicks without showing you cost per lead is hiding from the number that matters. Always ask: what did a lead cost in an account similar to mine?

Short contracts or rolling monthly is the right default. A 12-month lock-in with heavy exit fees protects the agency, not you. Most reputable agencies will offer rolling monthly arrangements because they are confident they can keep the account.
